About the MLA Research Institute

Peter F. Drucker understood the study of management to be a liberal art – “liberal” because management deals fundamentally with human nature, knowledge, and wisdom; and – “art” because it is concerned with practice and application.

Building upon the wisdom of Drucker, at CiAM we believe that knowledge, self-knowledge, wisdom, and leadership are essential to developing the individual as well as society. At CiAM we firmly believe that ‘management as a liberal art' (MLA) helps support personal development, organizational effectiveness, community development, and the realization of human dignity.

As a result, CiAM has formed the MLA Research Institute (MLARI), an institute that is dedicated to the study and application of management as a liberal art within organizations. With the purpose of advancing our understanding and application of MLA in organizations, the MLA Research Institute develops educational content, publishes its research, and offers training workshops.

The MLARI develops MLA-specific course assignments, class exercises, and case studies through which CiAM's students gain a solid understanding of MLA as well as learn how to apply MLA in real-life organizational settings. The MLA Research Institute also works with organizations to develop their knowledge of MLA and help improve their overall effectiveness.



Joseph A. Maciariello, Ph.D. - Research Director

Joseph A. Maciariello is Emeritus Marie Rankin Clarke Professor of Social Science and Management at the Peter F. Drucker and Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management in Claremont, California, and Research Director of the Joseph A. Maciariello Management as a Liberal Art Research Institute (MLARI) at The California Institute of Advanced Management (CiAM). He was Director of Research of The Drucker Academy, Hong Kong, and its Management as a Liberal Art Foundation from 2015-2018.

Dr. Maciariello collaborated with Peter Drucker to publish the two bestselling books, The Daily Drucker (HarperCollins 2004) and The Effective Executive in Action (HarperCollins 2006); and a three-part collection of Internet Modules titled Driving Change (Corpedia 2004) downloaded by approximately 400 thousand professionals.  In 2008, he revised Peter Drucker’s Management: Tasks, Responsibilities, Practices (HarperCollins 1973) published as Management Revised Edition (HarperCollins, 2008) and Peter Drucker’s book Management Cases (HarperCollins 1977) published as Management Cases Revised Edition (HarperCollins 2009). He and Karen Linkletter co-authored the book Drucker’s Lost Art of Management: Peter Drucker’s Timeless Vision for Building Effective Organizations (McGraw-Hill, April 2011). He published A Year with Peter Drucker: 52 Weeks of Coaching in Leadership Effectiveness on December 2, 2014. This mentoring book resembles The Daily Drucker and is devoted to doing for others what Peter Drucker did for a few during the last twenty years of his life. He has also authored numerous articles advancing the legacy of Peter Drucker the most important ones use an integrated (systems) framework of analysis to explain Drucker’s work.

Three of these articles are encyclopedia entries documenting for posterity three of the major contributions of Peter F. Drucker to the field of management. These encyclopedia entries are: “Practice of Management, The,” The Encyclopedia of Management Theory, Sage, Eric Kessler, ed., March 2013 (seven published pages); “Management by Objectives and Self Control,” Palgrave Macmillan, 19 October, 2014, Mie Augier and David Teece, eds. (eight published pages), and “Drucker, Peter: the Drucker Strategic management system,” The Palgrave Encyclopedia of Strategic Management, Mie Augier and David Teece, eds. 28 October 2015, (nine published pages).

Dr. Maciariello taught the course "Drucker on Management" for MBA and Executive MBA students for ten years, and prepared The Peter F. Drucker Curriculum for use throughout the world. The curriculum was revised and translated into Japanese in 2011. He has trained faculty members and executives around the world in Peter Drucker's vision of a functioning society of organizations in which individuals have status and function, and organizations are led by executives of integrity who direct dynamic processes of continuity and change. For the last four years, he has been developing the course The Practice of Management as a Liberal Art in partnership with The Drucker Academy of Hong Kong. He also taught the course by that name as an upper-level undergraduate course in spring 2013 at Wheaton College (Illinois) and as a Ph.D. 
research-level, Teacher Training course in spring 2016, and as an advanced master’s level-course 
in summer and fall 2017, and follow-on courses beginning in May 2018. The scholarly work supporting this course is currently being prepared for publication.


Karen E. Linkletter, Ph.D. - Researcher

Dr. Karen Linkletter is a researcher with the Joseph A. Maciariello Management as a Liberal Art Institute (MLARI), where she develops curriculum for CiAM and conducts research to advance the work of Peter F. Drucker. She and Dr. Maciariello co-authored the book Drucker’s Lost Art of Management: Peter Drucker’s Timeless Vision for Building Effective Organizations

Dr. Linkletter has published over 20 articles and essays on a variety of historical topics. She has an M.B.A. and a PhD in History from Claremont Graduate University and received her A.B. from U.C. Berkeley.  Dr. Linkletter taught in the American Studies Department at Cal State University, Fullerton for fifteen years. She is also a professional cellist, performing throughout southern California and teaching private students. She is an avid horseback rider and enjoys time with her horses, Spencer and Chance. 


Byron Ramirez, Ph.D. - Researcher

Dr. Byron Ramirez is professor of strategy at CiAM, and a researcher with the Joseph A. Maciariello Management as a Liberal Art Institute (MLARI). He has experience in strategy development and organizational analysis, and has worked with entrepreneurs and SMEs on developing strategic initiatives and actionable plans aimed at improving their market positioning, competitiveness, and effectiveness. Earlier in his career, Dr. Ramirez worked in corporate roles for the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Bank of America, Lennar Corporation, and Envirogen.

After completing his M.S. in strategy and management from the Drucker School of Management, he went on to complete a M.S. degree in international economics and international development at American University, School of International Service. Dr. Ramirez completed his PhD degree in economics and political science (political economy) at Claremont Graduate University where his research focused on entrepreneurship and innovation. 

Dr. Ramirez has taught MBA courses in economics, strategy, and management at different universities in the United States. He has published papers on entrepreneurship, innovation, technology, and sustainable development. Dr. Ramirez has completed executive certificate programs at the World Bank, Columbia University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and USC Marshall School of Business. He is a member of the American Economic Association, Academy of Management, Strategic Management Society, and Academy of International Business.
